丹波焼は、平安時代末期に窯の煙をあげて以来800年、途絶えることなく承け継がれ、「我が国<民陶>の歴史を語る焼物」として親しまれています。
丹波古陶館では、丹波焼の創成期から江戸時代末期に至る700年間に作られた代表的な品々を、年代・形・釉薬・装飾等に分類して展示しています。
山陰道の要衝として、篠山城を中心に広がった城下町、「丹波篠山」。丹波古陶館は篠山の中でもとりわけ江戸時代の風情を残し妻入の商家が立ち並ぶ河原町通りの一角にあります。

Tambayaki pottery was first baked in the late Heian period (12th century) and has continuously been handed down for 800 years. It is known familiarly as "the pottery that recounts Japanese history"
Tamba Kotoukan (Old Tamba Pottery Museum) displays typical pottery works that have been baked for 700 years since the genesis of Tambayaki to the late Edo period (19th century) by year, shape, glaze, decoration, etc.
Sasayama is the castle town that developed around the Sasayama castle as a strategic stop along the San'in-do (historical street). The Tamba Kotoukan is located in a corner of Kawaramachi that retains a special atmosphere of Sasayama in the Edo period as seen by the rows of merchant houses in tsumairi style.
You'll see a great number of beautiful daily wares including the "Kotamba Collection", a designated cultural property of Hyogo Prefecture.
The jar shown in the right photo is naturally glazed and from the Kamakura period (1192-1333). The background image (wall paper) shows a piece of Tamba cloth.
